R.I.P. PETER...

Oni wat yoh perlu kobos?

His last breath...
I don't know if many of you out there realise this but, Peter Benjamin Parker (Yes, Benjamin is Peter Parker's real middle name...go find out in Wikipedia is you don't believe me) just died in July in the Ultimate Sipderman Series: The Death of Spiderman. Personally, Peter's death was a bigger loss than Clark Kent's simply because I think Spiderman had a more appealing storyline, with a strong attachment to the real world. So guess who killed him? The Green Goblin of course...his age old nemesis.

I was a comic junkie since I was 7 years old, and the first comic I read wasn't Mutiara Naga, Raja Rimba, Juara Wira or Pendekar Laut. It was actually The Spectacular Spiderman (and also The Dark Knight series) and to tell you the truth, I didn't have an easy time reading it coz, in the world of American brand comics, a superhero's story is intertwined in different layers and universes. I got the biggest headache trying to sort out the things happening in the X-Men Universe because too many things happen at one time and too many storylines take place simultaniously. Lucky for me, those days I kept my mind set on simply reading Peter Parker's Spiderman.

Another reason for sticking to just one story was mainly because I could only afford one comic at a time. Hahaha...I use to buy it at this Mamak bookstore in India Street each time I had the opportunity to go to Kuching with any family member. It used to cost RM 6.80 per comic book and that was quite a big sum of money those days. But these days, I notice even the Hong Kong comics cost this much so you can imagine how much inflation is affecting people's interest in buying comic books.

Marks Belgey's artwork of Spiderman. He makes the jumps look so cool!
What I liked most about Spiderman especially in the 1990s was the artwork drawn by Mark Bagley coz of the way he drew Spiderman's postures and 'motion' was imaginative to the point whereby as a reader, you can really 'see' the dexterity and agility of Spidey's movements. The guys at Marvel really worked their hats off to bring out the lines and colours that make flipping the pages of the Spiderman comics a joy.

Miles Morales is the new Spiderman
So now that Peter's gone...is Spiderman also dead? Nope! His powers and superhero indentity exist in another teenager, and this time..the new Spiderman is Latino-Black. So the Spiderman story is being rebooted with a totally new alter-ego.That means I'll just have to reboot myself with the story once again, hahaha but it's a good thing..at least now, I have a comic storyline that I can honestly say I've read from the VERY BEGINNING.

So long Pete...
 Rest in peace Peter Parker....

Suria Perkasa Hitam a.k.a. Kesatria Baja Hitam a.k.a. Kamen Rider Black

Oni wat sirita tih doik obuok tayang? Many many years ago, when I was still a phlemy kid (budak ingusan la...) there was this one television show that somehow brainwashed the minds of almost every boy in my primary school. I'm gonna need the help of my fellow friends and readers to help me re-trace the steps of this television show, coz to be honest, the storyline was the last thing on my mind when I watched it. Tapi dalam aku cuba mengelak untuk ambil tauk pasal storyline cerita tok...masih juak aku dapat ingat dengan samar-samar apa sedang dilalui hero ya. Cerita nok aku maksudkan adalah....jeng jeng jeng! Nangga video tok dulok...jelmakan semula zaman gembira kanak-kanak anda! Henshin!!! Suria...Perkasa...Hitam!!!!!! Persoalan Minda: Aku heran dengan nama hero tok versi Indon ya - Kesatria Baja Hitam. Apa sebenarnya maksud 'baja' ya? Macam ne nama Kamen Rider Black, boleh ter'translate' kepada Kesatria  Baja Hitam? 'Kesatria' dan 'hitam' ya ...

Green Green River

Oni wat orud tih ponu tun duh? Tebas! Tebas! Jangan tak tebas!!! You must be wondering why on Earth did we try to manouvre a boat over grassland? Well, the problem is not that the boat is on land, it's actually coz the 'land' is invading the river! The lush greenery that you are seeing now is actually a river! This was I think one of the quirkiest field scenarios I've ever encountered in my career and it took place sometime in mid-2009 (dah lama dah...tapi coz nya interesting, aku post jak), it was actually suppose to be a riverine survey along the Karap River, a tributary of the Bakong & Baram River. Instead of actually surveying anything, all we did was try to get through all the vegetation. And here's the picture taken prior to the one above for to prove it! OMG!!!! What did we just get ourselves into... By the time we saw all those keladi-keladi buntings we already crying out, "Oh s**t!" and we were already regretting the trip was ...

Bidayuh Music?!!

Oni wat ya nai muzik Bidoyoh? Traditional Bidayuh Instruments One day, I saw a discussion on Facebook between some friends that was about Bidayuh MUSIC. I couldn't remember as to whether the discussion was about holding a competition for Bidayuh music or organizing some sort of Bidayuh music festival. Not so sure which one was it. But let me just ask this question; what exactly do you mean by Bidayuh 'music'?. For all I know, Bidayuh music that I have been exposed since I was a kid was those that involve an entire ensemble of gongs (tawak, kita'ak, pidabat and etc...). So when I read this discussion, it was odd for me to think that we would try to ask our modern songwriters to write new music from this type of ensemble. I was once told by village elders that to each kampung, their musical arrangement for this ensemble is different. So the beats played by the group from Grogo, will definitely differ from those who hail from Singgai, Pedawan or Serian. ...
