Tebas! Tebas! Jangan tak tebas!!! |
You must be wondering why on Earth did we try to manouvre a boat over grassland?
Well, the problem is not that the boat is on land, it's actually coz the 'land' is invading the river! The lush greenery that you are seeing now is actually a river! This was I think one of the quirkiest field scenarios I've ever encountered in my career and it took place sometime in mid-2009 (dah lama dah...tapi coz nya interesting, aku post jak), it was actually suppose to be a riverine survey along the Karap River, a tributary of the Bakong & Baram River. Instead of actually surveying anything, all we did was try to get through all the vegetation. And here's the picture taken prior to the one above for to prove it!

OMG!!!! What did we just get ourselves into... |
By the time we saw all those keladi-keladi buntings we already crying out, "Oh s**t!" and we were already regretting the trip was ever made. Those things didn't just grow in patches...they practically covered the ENTIRE STRETCH of river. There was no end to it. Imagine trying to push a boat through that mess...what if the engine and the blades got tangled with it?

Our fine captain trying to deliberate whether to go back or just jump ship. |
To be truthful, I had been in my fair share of boat rides, but this one was absolutely the toughest and the most ridiculous. Hahaha...by the time we got back, the only result of this trip was just fatigue and grashoppers. Yes! You heard me right, grasshoppers. There were millions of them and they wouldn't stop smashing into your face when the boat was on the move.

Our unintended stop before going home..got some nice rattan trees here. |
Our journey was just a couple of kilometres along the Karap River but we spent hours just trying to weed our way through the marshland. In the end, after only a short distance, our fuel was already half done and we had no choice but to stop at wherever we were at, take a short break and then return.

Me (in the army jacket) and my sidekick trying to find purpose in all of this..hahaha |
What a day that was, but it was worth it just for the adventure...but unproductive in terms of findings. Shall we do this again? Hahahaha.
ngeahaha. studied bout this. the water hyacinth (yes, thats keladi bunting in english) is a major disaster in most ponds and rivers. At first, one or two keladi bunting jd hiasan, but in the end they multiply and give you an eyeshore. guess what else are consider as weeds?? Kangkung! in other country, kangkung is as bad as these keladi bunting. but here, they are not, because kangkung is one of our delicacy. if only we can eat keladi bunting like the usual yam.haha
